The Ancient Theatre of Larissa

Larissa is one of the biggest Greek cities, capital of the county of Thessalia and a major commercial center. Pineios river is crossing through the city. It used to supply the whole city with water. Now the population of Larissa is around 164.000 people. According to the national weather service the temperature in the area is reaching 0 Celsius degrees in January which results to a frequent snowy landscape. The economy of this area was usually agricultural, because of the fertile lowlands, but now it has changed to a modern urban center with facilities such as hospitals (military, university, general hospitals) and many public services.

In Larissa there are clothing shops and a market place where everyone can find anything they want. The area which is inhabited from around 4.000 b.C. according to the archaeological researches had known a very big growth. In the ancient years the city had its own currency, which is saved until today. This is the symbol of the city.

The Ancient Theatre of Larissa which was built on the south side of the fortress hill on the 3rd century b.C. During the Roman years this theatre was used as an arena. On the southwest side of the Pefkakia hill, the Romans built the 2nd ancient theatre, which still remains partially. The Hippocrates tomb and the Poseidon’s monument are the other significant archaeological monuments which anyone should see.
