Koules: The Venetian Fortress on Heraclion city port.

Anyone who visits Heraklion, the metropolis of Crete, can easily understand the size of this city, and the reason so many visitors are excited by it. It was called Handakas for the Saracens and Cantia for the Venetians. Nowadays, Heraclion, is made up of the new and old town. The old town is inside the Venetian walls and is still picturesque after all these years. At the south side of the walls lies the tomb of one of the most important writers of Greece, Nikolaos Kazantzakis. This place has a view of the whole city and the Venetian port. Another sights worth seeing are the Koules Fortress at the port entrance, the Basilica of Saint Marcus, a venetian cathedral church built in 1239, which is now use for various exhibitions, conventions and lectures, the saint Titos church, the saint Minas cathedral and finally the central square of Heraclion, Square Eleutherias with the famous fountain of the Three Lions and the Saint George’s gate.

In the south of the city, there is the Knossos Palace, of the reigning state of Crete that ruled over 100 cities in the prehistoric ages. Lotzia is considered as the most elegant Venetian monument that won the EUROPA NOSTRA award in 1987 for the best renewed and well preserved European monument of the year. Daidalos street is ideal for shopping as it is the commercial pedestrian street in the heart of the city. Take a moment to relax having a coffe in Korai street . Also visit the archeological museum, the History museum of Crete, the Battle museum of Crete and the Natural History museum.
