The natural surroundings of Komotini, is simply unique

Komotini is a city located in Northern Greece and more specifically in Thrace. It is known for its university campus, as it is the venue of Democritus university which consists of the departments of Political Sciences, Greek philology, Sports Academy, History and Ethnology, International Economic Relations, Public Management etc.There is a rich marketplace and also cafeterias, restaurants and many hotels. Amongst others there are Archaeological, Folklore, Ecclesiastical and Byzantin Museums, and last but not least, the Museum of Karatheodoris, dedicated to the great Greek mathematician who lived on the 20th century, who was the man who helped Albert Einstein on the founding of the relativity theory. In this museum, amongst others, there is the mail exchange of the Greek mathematician with Einstein and photographs of his participations to the world’s most significant scientific conventions. From the Ottoman period there are remains of monuments such as the Clock Tower, a sample of the Ottoman modernization, the Yeni mosque and the Imaret which is considered as one of the Ottomans oldest architectural samples, built on 1370-1380. During the Byzantine Empire the city was a significant fortress that hospitalized a lot of refugees from the nearby fortresses of the empire. During the 1821 Greek Revolution, a lot of residents were members of the Friendly Company, a crucial organization for the Greek Liberation. There was a big Jewish community in the city, which was terminated by the German and Bulgarian conquerors during World War 2, and only a few people from this community have survived to this day.
